Heinz and Farley’s have a long heritage of feeding babies

Farley’s
Farley’s was founded as a baker’s shop in Plymouth in the 1850’s. In 1880, Dr W P Eales became concerned with the health of working class children. He asked Edwin Farley to make a biscuit rusk that would be nutritious and affordable for low-income families.

In 1919, Farleys went on to expand the business by making Infant Milk and baby cereals, as well as the now famous rusks. The company was sold to the H J Heinz Company in 1994. Production of Farley’s Baby Milk and dry baby food now takes place in the picturesque town of Kendal in the Lake District.

Farley’s today is about much more than just Rusks. There is a wide range of baby cereals, savoury meals, desserts and baby milks, all produced to the same high standards that made Farley’s Rusks so famous.

Heinz
Heinz started making baby food in 1931 and right from the start, Heinz worked with doctors, health visitors, paediatricians and other experts whose support and advice are vital to ensure the superior quality of Heinz baby food.

In the early days, due to rationing of meat, the baby food range focused on vegetable and dessert based recipes. There were originally only 14 simple recipes of Heinz baby food, including Vegetable Soup, Bone and Vegetable Broth and Apple, Prune & Custard. As meat became more readily available, the range expanded.

In the 1950’s the Heinz baby food range was expanded further to include Heinz meals in glass jars, as well as a range of Junior foods with textured pieces for older babies.

Since that time the market has continued to grow. The nutritional status of babies has improved dramatically since the 1950's, so that nutritional deficiency diseases such as rickets (lack of Vitamin D) and scurvy (lack of Vitamin C) have almost disappeared. Heinz has always been at the forefront of ensuring that baby food has the right composition and nutritional values.
